Do I need to pay customs duty when exporting a car from NI to ROI?
No, cars originating in Northern Ireland are not subject to customs duty when moving to the Republic of Ireland under the Northern Ireland Protocol. However, Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) may apply.
What is VRT, and how is it calculated?
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is a tax required to register a car in Ireland. It is calculated based on the car’s Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) and CO₂ emissions. The Irish Revenue website provides a VRT calculator for estimates.
What documents do I need to import a car into ROI?
You’ll need the original V5C (logbook), a purchase invoice, proof of address, ID, and a VRT appointment confirmation from the NCTS.
How long do I have to register the car in ROI after bringing it in?
You must book a VRT inspection and register the vehicle within 30 days of bringing it into Ireland to avoid penalties.
